According to the classical view, xylary fibres are usually dead at maturity and, a their primary function is mechanical support. However, Fahn and Leshem (1 Wolkinger (1970a, è) have reported that mature wood fibres possessing nuclei and ing alive for several years are a common feature of many species. In addition to these elements function in storage of reserve carbohydrate, and in fact, the pre numerous starch grains appears to be one reliable indicator that the fibres (Wolkinger, 1969).During the course of studies of carbohydrate metabolism in sugar maple (Acer um Marsh.), we noted that in roots of 2-year-old seedlings starch comprised over cent of the total dry weight of the sample during the fall and winter months. W exception of the vessels, essentially all of the elements of the axial and radial syst xylem were heavily packed with starch (Plate 1 ac) as observed in 60 fim cross sec 15 fim tangential sections stained with I2KI (Jensen, 1962). Although the stem c less than half the starch content of the roots, most of the mature wood fibres w functional in storage.
