The article discusses the role 4-hydroxynonenal (4-HNE) in modulating a wide variety of cellular processes and activating numerous signaling pathways including those that contribute to adaptive cytoprotective responses and cell death. 4-HNE is one of the major end products of lipid peroxidation. It can also act as a signaling molecule and modulates protein kinase B and C, mitogen-activated protein kinase, and tyrosine kinase receptors.
