D4-VIIIa is ca. 2.1±0.2. threo-$-111-under the same conditions decomposes to a mixture of Ds-Vllla and D5-VIIIb in which the ratio of phenylshifted Ds-VIIIb to phenyl-unshifted D,--Villa is again ca. 2.1± 0.2. A methylene proton signal is absent, and the/3-methyl signal appears as a clear singlet at 1.60. The appearance of the proton signals for the a-and/3-methyl groups and the methylene group in the case of the labeled systems, especially the DS-IIIOH, as well as the observed integrations, indicate very little or no extraneous proton exchange or scrambling.
