Energy expenditures of 12 cadets in a military training establishment were measured through an exact diary and timing technique. Simultaneously, food intakes were calculated both in messes and in canteens ("extras"). Even men from a homogenous group like this were found to expend vastly different amounts of energy at the same task. There was no correlation between expenditures and intakes of individuals or group means on the same day, but there was a significant correlation between mean daily energy expenditure and mean food intake 2 days later.
