Assessed negative symptoms in 24 schizophrenic outpatients who remained clinically stable after neuroleptic discontinuation and compared the severity of neuroleptic side effects in an extended sample of 58 medicated deficit and nondeficit schizophrenic Ss. In Ss whose neuroleptics were discontinued, the deficit group had significantly higher ratings in negative symptoms than did nondeficit patients, and this difference remained throughout the 2-wk evaluation period. In the extended sample, the deficit subgroup did not have more extrapyramidal symptoms.(PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2018 APA, all rights reserved)
