In Aspergillus, as in most other eukaryotes, there are a number of tubulin polypeptides that are coded by a family of related genes. Two alpha-tubulin polypeptides, alpha 1 and alpha 3, are coded by the tub A gene and a third alpha tubulin, alpha 2, by another gene, tub B.'Similarly, two beta-tubulin polypeptides, beta 1 and beta 2, are coded by the ben A gene, and a third polypeptide, beta 3, is coded by tub C.'A number of mutations have been identified in the ben A and tub A genes that have been helpful in analyzing the functions of the ben A and tub A gene products; but, heretofore, no mutations have been described in the tub B or tub C genes.
