Over the past three years, the integration of the Continuing Survey of Food Intakes by Individuals (CSFII), and the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) has progressed. This integration was urged in the National Nutrition Monitoring and Related Research Act of 1990, requested by many users of the data from both surveys, and viewed as the most efficient use of the limited funds available in government for nutrition monitoring purposes. The US Department of Agriculture's Agricultural Research Service (ARS) and The US Department of Health and Human Service's National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) have spearheaded the integration process, with extensive advice and guidance by both federal and private survey data users." What We Eat in America," the dietary portion of the new integrated survey, will be administered as part of the NHANES beginning in January 2002. NCHS will be responsible for sample design, survey operations, oversight, and other aspects of NHANES. ARS will have the lead responsibility for refining its new automated multiple-pass method for collecting 24-hour dietary recalls, maintaining related systems and databases, and processing the dietary data. The new USDA automated dietary recall method is designed to engage the respondent more completely and provide more complete dietary recalls than earlier methods.
