Acute bacterial meningitis continues to present im-portant challenges to pediatricians and others who care for children. Excluding the neonatal period the peakincidence occurs at 6 to 9 months of age and falls rapidly during the preschool years." In our country Haemophilus influenzae is the leading etiologic agent, with Neisseria meningitidis and Streptococcus pneumoniae next in order, the three species accounting for 84% of all reported cases of bacterial meningitis."
