A study of the ultrastructure of the eye of a visual mutant (A-type) ofDrosophilahas revealed some interesting structural changes within the photoreceptor cells which may help in relating structure to function. At eclosion the mutant eye appears to be structurally normal, with the exception that the retinula cell pigment lies at some distance behind each rhabdomere. Eyes examined at different ages show degenerative changes exclusively in the rhabdomeres. At 5 days a few of the rhabdomeres show small areas of vesiculation. At 2 weeks many of the rhabdomeres are reduced in size and/or are partially disrupted by vesiculation, yet at 4 weeks deterioration has not progressed extensively. Wildtype eyes show no such degeneration with age. The findings are discussed in relation to abnormalities produced in photoreceptor organelles by a variety of agents.
