Zonyl FSC, a cationic fluorosurfactant, significantly enhanced the cariostatic ef fect of F when administered to rodents at 0.1% concentration in the drinking water [Caslavska et al., 1987]. Similarly, 30-second topical applications of neutral 200ppm F (4 times/week) caused a 13% caries inhibition in the hamster, while ap plication of the same solution with 0.2% Zonyl FSC caused a 40% inhibition [Gron et al., 1987], In the present work, the car iostatic effects of two cationic surfactants, Zonyl FSC and Lodyne S-106, were com pared when administered to hamsters in fluoridated drinking water at 0.2% con centration. The cationic surfactants se lected for this study were Zonyl FSC (Du Pont Co., Wilmington, Del.) and Lodyne S-106 (Ciba-Geigy Co., Ardsley, NY). Zonyl FSC contains 50% of active compo nents, which are fluoroalkylthioether qua ternary ammonium methylsulfates in a solvent of 25: 25% isopropanol and PLO.
