Based on fieldwork examining border porosities between Greece and the Republic of Macedonia this paper outlines the crossings of money, goods and services between the two countries in different temporal contexts. Going beyond the political and symbolic conflict over who has the legitimate right to the name ‘Macedonia’, a conflict which has effectively overshadowed the other levels of interaction and contact since 1991, the ethnographic research in the border area has suggested intensive cross-border activity between the Republic of Macedonia and Greece, motivated by economic reasons, ownership, entertainment and tourism. For each of these fields of research morality appears as a necessary analytical device that traces law, borders, neoliberal modalities and contemporary nationalism across different temporal axes.
