Secondary hermaphrodites are descr. The worms show ordinary [male]characters but are provided with an ovary containing typical egg cells. The ovary is located between the testes and the posterior intestinal junction. In some specimens vitelline glands, oviduct and uterus were found, but a [female] genital pore could not be distinguished. This transformation is favored by certain hosts (guinea pigs, hamsters, and rabbits). No hermaphrodites of S. japonicum or S. haematobium, under similar conditions, were observed.
