Scientific and technical progress have had a great impact upon life and its environment. Consequently, scientists who deal with such problems are required. Formerly these issues were handled by various professionals specialised in a particular field without a comprehensive environmental education. Due to the increasing complexity and extent of environmental problems, there is a need for specifically educated environmental scientists. Recently universities and technical colleges in Switzerland and elsewhere offer special curricula for scientists who need to cope with such problems.
