This essay grew out of an attempt to discuss “Why d-gene segments: d-diversity or d-disaster?’The analysis of that subject took on a life of its own and grew further as our discussion had to confront the different views of the origin of the repertoire, hapiotype exclusion and the evolution of the loci encoding the T-and B-cell receptors for antigen. Although our analysis encompassed both the T-and B-cell repertoires, space limitations have forced us to present them separately.
