MATERIALS AND METHODSBetween 1935 and 1963, 42 cases of symptomatic ureteral stumps were encountered. During this period 4,883 nephrectomies (not including those for urothelial malignancies of the upper urinary tract) had been performed. Ureteral stumps with carcinomas developing concurrently or subsequently to those of the upper urinary tract were not included in this study. There were 24 female and 18 male patients, ranging from 3 to 72 years old (average 40 years). The right and left sides were affected with equal frequency. The majority of patients had the usual signs of urosepsis-urgency, frequency, dysuria, hematuria and cloudy urine (table 1). Draining flank sinus and lower quadrant (suprapubic) abdominal pain ranked next. In 2 patients a pelvic mass was found on vaginal examination. Indications (often multiple) for the previous nephrectomy are noted in table 2. No carcinomas existed in the parts of the urinary tract removed. The interval between simple nephrectomy and subsequent excision of the remaining stump varied from 3 months to 25 years (average 6
