We investigated the effects of hyper- and hypoventilation on gastric () and sublingual (P) tissuebefore, during, and after reversal of hemorrhagic shock.was measured with ion-sensitive field-effect transistor sensor and Pwith a CO2microelectrode. Under physiological conditions and during hemorrhagic shock, decreases in arterial () and end-tidal ()induced by hyperventilation produced corresponding decreases inand P. Hypoventilation produced corresponding increases in,,, and P. Accordingly, acute decreases and increases inandproduced statistically similar decreases and increases inand P. No significant changes in the tissue-gradients were observed during hemorrhagic shock in the absence or in the presence of hyper- or hypoventilation. Acute changes inand Pshould, therefore, be interpreted in relationship with concurrent changes inand/or.
