By the use of squid giant nerve fibers it was possible, by extrusion from the cut ends of teased and ligated single giant fibers, to obtain axoplasm virtually uncontaminated with extracellular material. Analysis of such isolated axoplasm shows that K is present in a conc. about 18 times that in the blood. The total conc. of inorganic ions is only 63% that of the blood, cations being 4 to 5 times as concentrated as anions (chiefly chloride). This deficiency of anions (about 0.5 molal) is probably made up by organic anions of moderate ionic wt. The chloride conc. in axoplasm, while low, is appreciable, being 0.13 m. eq. per g. of axoplasm water, or about 25% that of the blood.By the use of squid giant nerve fibers it was possible, by extrusion from the cut ends of teased and ligated single giant fibers, to obtain axoplasm virtually uncontaminated with extracellular material.
