Neutrophils are not excitable cells, yet ion currents matter for their function. Immler et al. 1 show that the voltage-gated potassium channel Kv1. 3 (gene name Kcna3) is critical for neutrophil function. This new discovery complements previous work showing the key role of intracellular free calcium [Ca2þ] i for many neutrophil functions. Store-operated calcium channels (SOCE) 2 and calcium release-activated calcium (CRAC) channels 3 have long been known to be involved in regulating [Ca2þ] i. Myeloid cells also express transient receptor potential channels that have been implicated in inflammatory functions. 4 But the role of Kv1. 3 is different in that this channel does not directly regulate calcium flux.
