Granulomas may be found in up to 10 per cent of specimens from routine percutaneous liver biopsies.1Non-organ-specific antibodies to mitochondria occur in less than 1 per cent of the general population and in a similar proportion of patients with sarcoidosis.2Such antibodies are present in over 95 per cent of patients with primary biliary cirrhosis,2,3a disorder that may have histologic and clinical similarities to sarcoidosis.
