Sera from 2 girls with systemic lupus erythema-tosus were treated with 0.04 M mercaptoethanol. Mercaptoethanol breaks down the rheumatoid factor, which had previously been shown to be capable of masking Australia antigen (hepatitis B antigen). The rheumatoid factor was present in the serum of both patients. It is also suggested that sera to be tested for Australia antigen should be inactivated at 56°C for 30 minutes since certain sera contain a heat-labile factor, probably Clq, which can also mask Australia antigen and agglutinate latex particles in the same way as the rheumatoid factor.A.
