Cardiovascular function was investigated in 26 women, mean 75.3 ± 7.4 years old who were considered to have had high exposure to cadmium through ingesting contaminated water, rice and fish around World War I and II, and to subsequent low-grade exposure from agricultural produce harvested from Cd-polluted areas and were being treated for chronic Cd-induced disorders. These subjects had a significantly lower erythrocyte count and haemoglobin content in blood and significantly lower systolic and diastolic blood pressure than did healthy controls. Sybjects with chronic Cd disease were more often free from ischaemic changes of the heart than the controls. Low frequency may be attributed to low blood pressure. There was a tendency for subjects with chronic Cd disease to develop disorders of the conduction system of the heart, measured using an electrocardiogram.
