CONCLUSIONSThe absorption of beta particles by liquids may be used for very accurate determination of density of binary liquid mixtures or mixtures where the content of hj'drogen (chemically bonded) or heavy elements does not vary significantly. The density of such liquids may be recorded con-tinuously with an accuracy of±0.0002 gram per ml. at p= 1.00 gram per ml. In combination with an independent density measurement, beta particle absorption measurements may be used to determine the weight per cent of chemically bonded hydrogen in liquid hydrocarbon mixtures with an accuracy of 0.1% absolute. The method may also be used to determine hydrogen in other organic liquids if small correc-tions are applied for the content of oxygen, sulfur, and other heavier elements. Similarly, deter-mination of one element, as for example sulfur or chlorine, may be made if the hydrogen content and density are meas-ured independently. The beta particle absorption apparatus thus promises to become a useful instrument forboth con-tinuous plant analysis of liquids and in analytical laboratory applications.
