In this chapter we study a class of navigation problems of Zermelo on the water and under the water. These are “optimal control” problems that describe the following situation: An object (a boat or a submarine) travels in a stream of water towards a target. How should the steering angle of the object be controlled, so that the object reaches the target in shortest time ? We will study a simple situation in which the water flows with a constant velocity vector (current). It is also assumed that the object’s speed and its steering angle are constant. If the target is a convex set, then Zermelo’s problems can be formulated as convex parametric programming models. Our objective is to illustrate several typical situations using the preceding results.
