DiscussionNasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) is rare in most parts of the world, but is more common in southern China, Southeast Asia, and North Africa. Once thought to occur most frequently in Hong Kong and Taiwan where 1 in 40 men develop NPC before the age of 75, NPC is also, interestingly, noted to arise in immigrants from these areas [1]. However, these trends appear to be changing slightly. Parts of Malaysia and Singapore are demonstrating increasingly higher rates than that seen in Hong Kong [6]. The annual incidence in the United States and Europe is approximately 1 per 100,000 of the population and shows a 2: 1 male: female prevalence with a peak age of incidence in the sixth decade [2].
