In larger eutrophic lakes autochthonous (i.e., dissolved and particulate organic substances produced within the water-body) are the main sources of energy. But in smaller eutrophic lakes, for instance in those of the ‘Waldhumussee’-type (Utermohl 1974), or in oligotrophic lakes, allochthonous organic matter can play an important ecological role difficult to estimate accurately (Ohle 1972; Casith & Hasler 1976; Overbeck 1982). Its main source is autumn-shed leaves (Kaushik & Hynes 1968; Petersen & Cummins 1974).
