Egypt of the Pharaohs (1961). This work is a translation from the French original (Hisroire de L’Egypt ancienne,(1 988) and is fair-ly readable. Grimal writes an account of the political and economic history of Egypt from the beginning of human settlement in the area to the advent of Greek rule in 332 BC He incorporates anthropological and ethnographic research in his history, and erases old distinctions between archaeology and philology.Grimal views Egypt as a coherent and unchanging entity from the Gerzean period (c. 3500 Bc) to the advent of Christianity (c. AD 400). He claims that the change from prehistory to history in Egypt was a slow process of evolution and not a technological revolution traced back to outside influence, notably from Uruk-period Mesopotania. Though Grimal is right to assert indigenous developments in the beginning of Egyptian history, he is incorrect in his discounting the importance of other influences.
