The goal of a well designed clinical trial is to answer clinical questions decisively and as inexpensively as possible. Cost considerations are particularly important in multicentre studies which require substantial time, effort and funding. This paper discusses two aspects of designing trials:(1) determination of required sample size and (2) determination of the participants’ ability to recruit a sufficient number of patients. Finally, we address some possible strategies to use if a recruitment problem arises during the study.
