Weathering rinds on surface boulders of the Torlesse Supergroup sandstones of New Zealand thicken with time. The rate of rind growth has been determined using age control from radiocarbon dated deposits. The rate decays exponentially, suggesting that the weathering is determined by rates of diffusion of reactants through the rind. Weatheringrind thicknesses thus provide a means of determining the age of surfaces where age (years) = 1030 R1 24 and R is modal rind thickness in millimeters of about 50 boulders on the surface of the deposit. A number of factors besides time affect the rate of growth of rinds: the two most important were found to be grain size and degree of metamorphism. Accelerated rind growth occurs on coarser grained rocks, while rind growth is inhibited in finer grained rocks and by higher metamorphic grade. Rind thickness measurements on moraines in the Upper Waimakariri Catchment help to establish a Holocene glacial chronology for the area. Times of cirque glacier advance are 0 to 430, 1000 to 2500, 4000, and 7600 to 9500 yr BP.
