The preparation of 3-methylthymidine, 5-hydroxydeoxyuridine, and 5-bro-modeoxyuridine and an improved method for the deamination of deoxycytidine are described. 5-Hydroxydeoxyuridine was shown to suppress completely the growth of E. coli K-12 at 18 hours at a level of 20 [mu]g/ml. 5-Bromodeoxyuridine is about l/30th as effective, while 3-methylthymidine, thymidine, deoxycytidine and deoxyuridine produce no inhibition. It is of interest that 5-substituted deoxyribosylpyrimidines are the only substituted nucleosides which inhibit growth of microorganisms which require neither purine nor pyrimidine compounds for growth.
