APHASIA, a common, distressing, and often permanent aftereffect of neurologic disease, has received little attention in recent years not only in general medical publications but even in the neurologic literature. This neglect has resulted from the idea that the aphasias are exotic disorders, of little practical value to the clinician, and not susceptible to experimental analysis, and that discussion of them demands a penchant for abstruse philosophical speculation.
