RESULTSAll 10 subjects began their occlusal force testing on the right side. The symptomatic subjects were able to maintain an occlusal force for a mean of 22.7 seconds (+ SD 12.6) on the right side and 18.6 seconds (f SD 6.5) on the left side.A total of 20 occlusal force events were recorded with the 55 N force on both the right and left side of the 10 subjects before treatment. Pain discomfort was experienced on the contralateral side on 12 events, five on the ipsilateral side, and three on the bilateral side. These results agreed favorably with an earlier study on 30 control subjects that demonstrated that the pain occurred predominantly on the contralateral side. The prescribed treatment for all of the subjects consisted of splint therapy to control muscular hyperactivity. Later, two subjects had occlusal adjustment and counselling and one biofeedback in combination with splint therapy.
