Humanitarian policy is in a quagmire. The neo‐liberal humanitarian paradigm, including its normative foundations and modus operandi, has been called into question by recent scholarship on the political economy of conflict. The knowledge that conflicts are socially constructed and that humanitarian agencies play a role in that process has produced a rupture between the theories of conflict analysis and the practice of engaging in conflict to mitigate its human costs and promote peace. While this rupture has caused a great deal of confusion, it also offers the opportunity to think beyond the neo‐liberal paradigm and forge a new and progressive response to conflict that forsakes neutrality in favour of direct political engagement. In addition to synthesising recent developments in conflict analysis to illustrate the quagmire, this article introduces an outline of how such a radical humanitarian paradigm could emerge.
