The inductive action of bronchial mesenchyme of mouse embryonic lung was studied by means of grafts of this mesenchyme into tracheal epithelium. The bronchial mesenchyme is able to induce a supernumerary bud from tracheal epithelium. The shape and manner of development of the bud resemble those of normal bronchial buds. It is concluded that at the stage studied the pulmonary mesenchyme consists of a bronchial part which induces budding from epithelium and of a tracheal part which does not. The early tracheal epithelium on the other hand is not very fully determined, as it is capable of producing a supernumerary bud under the action of bronchial mesenchyme. The results are discussed in relation to the general meaning of epithelio-mesenchymal interaction in the organogenesis of the pulmonary tree.
