The method of separation and determination of fluorescent whitening agent and alkyl benzenesulfonate in water and bottom muds was studied. The total quantity of fluorescent whitening agent was measured by fluorescence with the use of tetra-n-butyl ammonium hydroxide. The concentration of alkyl benzenesulfonate was determined by the u.v. method. To diminish the interfering materials the sample waters were washed with 1,2-dichloroethane before analysis. The distribution of methylene blue active substance, alkyl benzenesulfonate and fluorescent whitening agent in a small lake was determined by the proposed method.
