The fission yeast Schizosacchuromyces pombe exists in one of two mating types (Plus or Minus) and conjugation between two haploid cells involves a communication system based on the reciprocal action of diffusible mating factors, cells of each mating type releasing pheromones which induce mating-specific changes in cells of the opposite mating type [for review, see I]. Thus a P cell releases P-factor and responds to M-factor since it expresses the M-factor receptor while an M cell releases M-factor and responds to P-factor. Exposure to pheromone causes a change in the pattern of gene transcription, a GI arrest of cell growth and the unidirectional elongation of the cell to form a shmoo. M-factor is a post-translationally modified nonapeptide in which the carboxy-terminal cysteine residue is both S-farnesylated and carboxymethylated [2]. P-factor is an unmodified peptide of 23 residues (Figure 1)[3].
