The results of a study of four nuclear and six morphological characters inL. perenne, L. italicumand their F1and F2hybrid derivatives indicate that these two open-pollinated forms do not constitute distinct species. This suggestion is supported by a reanalysis of Jenkin's data [XXIV, 3040-3044 and XXVI, 1349, 1350] and is extended further to include a third open-pollinated form,L. rigidum. All three forms "are probably best regarded as subspecies." However, data on three self-pollinating types,L. remotum, L. temulentumandL. loliaceum, indicate that they may justifiably be regarded as distinct species.
