GOLDBERG, AL, AND HM GOODMAN. Amino acid transport during work-induced growth of skeletal muscle. Am. J Physiol. 216 (5): 1 I1 ll 115. 1969.-The accumulation of a-aminoisobutyric acid (AIB) by the soleus and plantaris muscles of the rat was studied in vivo during work-induced growth. Unilateral tenotomy of the gastrocnemius caused rapid hypertrophy of these muscles of the operated limb. During the growth process, the hypertrophying muscles concentrated AIB to a greater extent than contralateral controls. This increase was found in normal, diabetic, and hypophysectomized rats, and thus appears independent of insulin or growth hormone. Increased accumulation was evident 4 hr after tenotomy of the synergist, and thus long before muscle growth could be demonstrated. After growth had ceased, the uptake gradually returned to control levels. The increase in uptake required muscle work and was specific to the synergists of the gastrocnemius. Similar changes were found in animals treated with actinomycin D, even though this drug blocked the growth process. muscle hypertrophy; muscle growth; muscular work; exercise; compensatory growth; insulin; growth hormone
