Core-level electron-energy-loss spectroscopy has been applied to investigate the density of empty states above E F of the Co/Si (111) interface. Besides the Co L 2, 3 absorption edges, the first extended energy-loss fine structure has also been recorded. It gives insight into the local order of the interface. The comparison of both electronic and structural properties of the interface with those of bulk Co shows unambiguously the formation of various silicide compounds at the Co/Si (111) interface in the low coverage range.
