It is a common observation that arterial blood pressure rises as part of the behavioral response to stressful situations. This observation has drawn many to the conclusion that psychological factors contribute to arterial hypertension. However. the hypothesis that psychological factors contribute to arterial hyper tension is not very useful so long as the terms "stress" and "stressful situations" are not well defined. Inevitably, then, any discussion of the cardiovascular response to stress is likely to draw us into defining "stress." By common usage, "stress" implies a psychological effect of some influence that is usually consid ered undesirable or even harmful in some way. In addition, notions of percep tion, meaning, and previous experience intrude on anyone's personal use of the term. Although the idiomatic use of the term "stress" is woefully inadequate as a scientific definition, we are unlikely to agree upon a more precise statement of what we mean by "stress." Therefore, I have chosen to focus attention on the physiological and behavioral mechanisms whereby psychological factors might contribute to arterial hypertension.
