Reviews studies of animal learning (LR) and memory (MM), focusing on the expression of LR apart from its acquisition. Aspects of expression emphasized are (1) how expression of LR depends on previous and subsequent events and (2) how LR phenomena depend on the mode or circumstances of their expression. Conventional topics of Pavlovian conditioning and recent studies on retention and forgetting after short intervals are examined. Treatments that alleviate forgetting induced by explicit associative interference, amnestic treatments, or a lengthy retention interval are considered.
