Early descriptions of the development of the mucous membranes of the mammalian small intestine, such as those of Hilton (1902) in the rat, and Johnson (1910) in the human, were largely concerned with the histogenesis of the organ, and cytological development received little attention. On the other hand recent investigations using modern techniques have been confined to relatively circumscribed cytological problems, ignoring the more general aspects. Thus ribosomes and polysomes in developing rat intestine have been studied by Behnke (1963 a, b); Overton & Shoup (1964) have observed the autogeny of the brush border in the chick; and Moog (1961) has examined the cells histochemically. The only accounts of general differentiation have been those of Bonneville (1963) and of van Lennep (1964). This survey aims to give a general description of the development of the jejunal absorptive epithelial cells in the rat, from the 13th day of pregnancy until birth.
