This article reviews the literature on several questions regarding smokers with current or past alcoholism and treatment. The major outstanding research questions for smokers with a history of alcoholism are whether (a) the incidence of cessation threatening soberity is small and preventable;(b) a time-matched tailored program would increase quit rates over standard therapy;(c) smoking cessation is best done during, shortly after or some time after attaining abstinence from alcohol; and (d) smoking cessation treatment is best done by chemical dependency counselors or by tobacco treatment experts.(PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2023 APA, all rights reserved)
