The swimbladder, inner ear and lateral line systems of herring, sprat and other clupeoids are closely connected with each other. An account of the anatomy of these systems was given for adult herring [Clupea harengus] and sprat [Sprattus sprattus], with details of how they develop in the herring. These anatomical studies were interpreted in the light of physiological and behavioral experiments.
