Abstract This study is the first to examine long-term trends in male–female status inequality. Male–female status inequality is measured by the difference in mean status between men and women on Nam–Powers–Terrie SES scores. Overall, we found evidence of much greater inequality than indicated by previous studies in the status attainment literature. Results also indicate that levels of male–female status inequality increased between 1940 and 1980, changing little during the 1940s, increasing substantially during the 1950s and 1960s, and then declining modestly during the 1970s. Inequaltiy then declined sharply during the 1980s primarily as a result of an upgrading of female status.
