Design modification of existing products or prototypes requires the extraction of the coordinate data from the part surface, especially in cases where a CAD model of the part does not exist. In these reverse engineering situations, an automated CAD model generation method could be used to accomplish the objective. This paper presents a machine vision system capable of creating a contour CAD drawing for various flat sheet metal components typical in the aerospace industry. The process of image acquisition is accomplished by the integration of a CNC machine and a CCD line scan camera. The part is mounted on the bed of the CNC machine. and the camera is fixed on the spindle of the CNC machine. The camera is set up to acquire an image of the part with the field of view of the camera covering only a small portion of the part surface. The complete surface of the part is scanned by combining several images. These images are then processed and the boundary contours are extracted. The extracted boundaries are then analyzed and combined to create a line drawing of the whole surface of the scanned part. The created data is then interfaced with a CAD/CAM system and the NC code is generated from the drawing to machine the profile and drill holes in the part. The developed algorithms and the system setup are described and sample results are presented.
