DISCUSSIONIdentijcation of Anomem.-The most striking feature of the set of spectra is the absorption peak (type 2a) at ca. 844 cm.-l, of moderate or strong intensity, which can be correlated with the presence of the aD-glucopyranose structure, as opposed to its p-anomer. This peak, which is displayed by aD-glucopyranose and its reducing methyl ethers, by methyl aD-glucopyranoside and its methyl ethers, by derivatives of aD-glucosamine (Table 1), and by oligo-and poly-glucosans containing a-linkages (Table 3), but not by those compounds
