The primary purpose of the experitments presented here is to explore the contribution of the notochord to vertebral chondrogenesis. Efforts to define this relationship in the salamander have produced conflicting results. Kitchen ('49) reported that vertebral elements failed to develop following notochordectomy in the urodele embryo. Essentially the same operation by Holtzer ('52a) led to the conclusion that the notochord was dispensable to the formation of vertebral cartilage. Likewise, in the regenerated larval salamander tail, vertebral chondrogenesis mas unimpecled though the notochord did not regenerate (Holtzer, Holtzer and Avery,'55). The role of the notochord in vertebral chondrogenesis in the chick is also uncertain. Williams ('42) stated that the chick notochord plays only a mechanical role in'the formation of the centra. In a figure of a chorio-allantoic graft of trunk tissues lacking a notochord, Williams indicates a cartilaginous structure beneath the motor surface of the spinal cord similar to the centrum-like formations found in the salamander following notochordectomy (compare fig. 13 in Williams,'42
