Child abuse is both a social and medical problem, and pediatricians are often required to determine whether the physical injuries sustained by a child are the result of an accident, or a deliberate assault. Patterned injuries indicate the weapon used to inflict the injuries, and they help to differentiate between accidental and non-accidental injuries, and to determine the manner of abuse. We report two cases of patterned injuries in children, i.e. burn injuries caused by a hot lighter, and fingertip contusions in shaken baby syndrome, from the viewpoint of forensic pathologists.
