Although sediment delivery was conceived as a practical tool for estimating sediment storage at the spatial scale of catchments and the temporal scale of a year, no reliable tool can give useful results unless it is conceptually sound. It should be compatible with observations at larger and smaller temporal and spatial scales. It is argued that the measurements of sediment passing given points in the landscape are measurement of flux. The differences in flux, both at different points and at different times in the landscape, enable the identification of processes leading to spatial and temporal sources and sinks of sediment.
