throughout. The chapter, “Periodic Paralyses and Related Myotonic Diseases,” is, like many others in this book, succinct, well written, and a pleasure to read. It is a paradox that while chromosome location and defective gene are already established for hyperkalemic periodic paralysis, paramyotonia congenita, and myotonia congenita, they have not been determined in the case of the more common disorder, hypokalemic periodic paralysis. The chapter, “Bell’s Palsy and Idiopathic Cranial Neuritis,” overstates the frequency with which Bell’s palsy is found in association with other, more subtle manifestations of cranial neuritis. Robert G. Miller’s discussion of the “Chronic Fatigue Syndrome” is intelligent and fair, emphasizing the importance of normal diagnostic studies, the frequency of depression, and a coherent therapeutic approach: “I provide substantial reassurance about the relatively benign nature of the diagnosis and the strong tendency towards spontaneous improvement in the majority of patients.” This is a volume that you will want to use as more than a reference source. The brief individual subject chapters can comfortably, profitably, and pleasantly be read in full.
